Friday 28th July

Friday 28th July

End of the last week before the show opens. Few words to cover what we've been doing.

Friday was bits and pieces. Had very precise times to work scenes. Not in the chapel so did outside scenes inside. Good for voices – we have a tendency to speak loudly and excitedly, so its good to work in smaller rooms and get more natural. Was hoping to do a run to tie up the week and give a good indication of where we're at (and what we still have to do) but we ran outa time. Ran the second half and it was very long but helped to clarify character journeys. The play is very enjoyable but we need to really nail stuff to make it perfect. And the audience will tell us when its right.

Wednesday Night

Wednesday Night

Did a run. We got thru most of it. It felt quite long. Words to describe it include Stumbly, Useful, Potential, Mixed. It was pretty long and slow and involved a lot of running from door to door. Some scenes were good. Got some notes, the rest tomorrow. People were very tired.

Friday 21st July

End of a busy week. 5 days of 2pm-10 rehearsal. Really fancied a beer but have sworn to not drink until production begins. I made this vow 2 weeks ago then promptly went out and got wasted for my mate's birthday, so I have to keep this one. I usually give up for the 4 weeks or so during rehearsals. It sharpens everything up. And whenever I come back here I always get fitter – doing workouts and going running. It's a healthy time.

Time’s marching on

Time's marching on. We've got 2 weeks to go. I remember writing 5 weeks to go…

Ok we've just done our first run. Half on Wed night in the chapel and half today in rehearsal room. 2 different results. The first run (totalling 1hour and 35 mins) was, in parts, quite brilliant. Saw scenes I haven't seen before because we're working on different stuff all the time. People have really put in the hours. The Fairy scenes and characters are wonderful to watch already. Felt messy with my scenes but a lot of it stuck. Not really worried about the time because it was a rough block-thru (with some real magic and moments) and we've time and space to get it up to speed.

Latest Thrilling Edition

Very quickly got used to working back in the chapel. It’s a wonderful place to work. The accoustics are incredible. The atmosphere is alive. And the smell is amazing!! Actually it can be purchased in handy bottles for a very reasonable price at Rosslyn Chapel gift shop… Your living room can also smell like a 5th Century stone chapel!

Day 2

More punctuation… But we moved faster and did exercises. Amazing how freeing it is simply moving about on chairs. The story becomes clear and the effort we put into moving feeds the words without us working for it. Lines fall into place better when I don’t overthink them

It starts…

Monday morning 9am standing on a grey wet Edinburgh street prepared for the start of it all. Got the bus up last night – late, slept fairly badly – then had to sort my bank account out – whilst I was enjoying Pink Floyd in Hyde Park on sat someone was helping themself to money from my account, but finally made it to Roslin and the rehearsal room.
